In response to the Libyan House of Representatives‘ announcement declaring its term over and recognising the government led by Osama Hamad as the legitimate authority until a new unified government is appointed, the Libyan Government of National Unity issued a press release.

The Unity Government asserts its legitimacy from the Libyan Political Agreement embedded in the constitutional declaration, emphasising its commitment to this agreement, which mandates ending the transitional phase through presidential and legislative elections.

The statement further elaborated on the Unity Government’s efforts in enhancing public services and implementing measures to uplift the living and economic conditions despite significant challenges.

During a recent meeting convened by Aguila Saleh, speaker of the House, and attended by longstanding members, a series of decisions identical in form and substance were reiterated, which the Unity Government criticizes as lacking quorum, transparency, and integrity.

The Unity Government accused the House’s leadership and its adherents of neglecting their commitments to the political agreement and constitutional declaration by repeatedly withdrawing trust from the government and establishing a parallel government without tangible impact.

These decisions, according to the Unity Government, do not alter reality and are seen as mere statements from a political faction struggling to extend its tenure and benefits.

The Unity Government dismisses these recurring declarations as non-binding political opinions and views them as expressions of one of the political parties, which it believes in and ensures freedom of expression for all parties and citizens alike.

In an official session held on Tuesday, the House of Representatives unanimously voted to end the mandate of the executive authority of the preparatory phase, recognizing the government of Osama Hamad as the legitimate government until a unified one is chosen, and declaring the Army’s commander-in-chief as the President of the House of Representatives as stated in the constitutional declaration and the House’s decision.
