Libya has called for the urgent provision of European support to secure its southern borders and provide equipment and training to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency and the Border Guard, as well as addressing the situation of undocumented migrants in Libya by repatriating them to their home countries.
This request was made in a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior of the Temporary National Unity Government following a meeting with a European technical team appointed by the European Court of Auditors, responsible for auditing the accounts of the European Union’s Emergency Trust Fund for Africa in Libya.
The European team held its meeting at the Office of International Relations and Cooperation, attended by the Director of the department, the Director-General of Coastal Security, the Director of the Human Rights Office, and some heads of offices and departments in the Coastal Security and International Relations and Cooperation directorates, along with members from the European Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
During the meeting, discussions revolved around EU-funded projects in Libya and the review of joint activities between both sides.
The Libyan side emphasized several points, as recorded by the European team, with the most critical being the inadequate support provided to Libya in combating illegal immigration.
The call for European support highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Libya in managing its borders and addressing the issue of undocumented migrants within its territory.
As Libya seeks assistance from European partners, it underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing migration-related issues and enhancing border security in the region.
