Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in the capital, Damascus, on Monday to discuss the issue of Syrian refugees in Jordan and bilateral relations.
The official Jordanian television reported that Assad received Safadi in his second official visit to Damascus since last February, without providing further details about the meeting.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) stated that Assad discussed with Safadi “the file of the return of Syrian refugees and the bilateral relations between Jordan and Syria.
A Syrian presidential statement emphasized that “Assad stressed that the safe return of Syrian refugees to their villages and towns is a priority for the Syrian state, along with the necessity of ensuring the infrastructure for their return, the requirements for reconstruction and rehabilitation in all its forms, and supporting them with early recovery projects that enable the returnees to regain their normal lives.”
Safadi also met with his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Mekdad, in Damascus, where they discussed efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and several bilateral issues.
Syrian diplomatic sources informed the German news agency that “the visit of the Jordanian minister comes within the framework of preparations for the start of rounds of meetings of the specialized committees resulting from the meetings held in Amman, Jeddah, and the outcomes of Syria’s return to the Arab League, in implementation of the Arab League summit’s decision.”
