Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has accused Israel of defying the international community and violating international law by committing war crimes, leaving the world powerless to respond. During his keynote speech at the opening session of the 21st Doha Forum, titled “What now for the Middle East,” Safadi anticipated that Israel’s objectives in the Gaza war extend beyond their publicly stated goals.
Safadi described the Gaza war as a systematic effort to depopulate the Gaza Strip. According to Jordan’s “Al-Dustour” newspaper, he stated, “The Israeli occupation policy insists on driving out the people of Gaza from the sector.” He stressed that Israel’s war aims include creating a new reality that leads to more hatred and problems in the region and the world.
Safadi highlighted Jordan’s ongoing efforts to communicate the risks of the Gaza assault. He expressed disappointment that the world has not yet reached the stage of collectively demanding an end to what could be described as genocide under international law.
During a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the Arab and Islamic delegation emphasized the need to stop the aggression, allow sufficient humanitarian aid throughout the sector, and ensure the protection of civilians. The delegation expressed strong opposition to the displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and Israel’s control over certain parts of it. “We called for aid, but there was a fundamental difference of opinion regarding the need to immediately end these atrocities. I believe negotiations will progress in the coming days, but we must emphasize the following point,” Safadi said.
Safadi added that there is a universal demand for Israel to act according to international laws. He warned that the situation in Gaza cannot continue and poses a threat to the entire region. He reiterated that Israeli policy is adamant about continuing to expel the people of Gaza from the sector.
Jordan has maintained a firm stance regarding the Gaza conflict, as highlighted by its Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and other government officials. Minister of Government Communications Muhannad Mubaidin reiterated Jordan’s unwavering position on the Israeli war against the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the kingdom’s commitment to diplomatic and humanitarian endeavors in aiding the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank. Jordan, under royal directives, has dispatched relief food and medical assistance to the besieged strip and has stressed the importance of protecting the region from the danger of the conflict’s expansion.
The Jordanian government has expressed deep concern over the escalation of violence and its potential catastrophic repercussions. There are fears that the war could lead to a wider regional conflict, which could have severe consequences. Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has emphasized that the decision to end the war rests with Israel and urged all efforts to be exerted to end it. Jordan has also been involved in diplomatic efforts with the United States and other countries to address the crisis and find a resolution.
Additionally, Jordan has considered various options in response to the conflict, with Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh stating that “all options are on the table.” This statement underscores the seriousness with which Jordan views the situation and its potential implications for regional stability. Jordan is also reviewing its economic, security, and political ties with Israel and may take actions such as freezing or revoking parts of its peace treaty with Israel if the Gaza conflict worsens.
The conflict has reawakened long-standing fears in Jordan, which is home to a large population of Palestinian refugees. There is a concern that a wider conflict could lead to the mass displacement of Palestinians, which Jordan views as a “red line” and a declaration of war. The country has fortified its positions along its borders in response to these concerns.
