Italy’s Foreign Minister and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, has issued a warning against intervention in Niger, stating that such interference could portray Italy as a predatory entity.
His remarks came during his address on Wednesday at the “Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples” held in Rimini, central Italy, which this year focused on the theme “Common Challenges in Africa.”
Tajani reiterated Italy’s cautious approach toward the recent coup in Niger, emphasizing their stance that avoids any Western intervention that might trigger negative reactions across Africa.
He expressed that Italy has consistently sought dialogue as the prevailing method, even as they expressed sympathy for the ousted president and called for a return to democracy.
However, they firmly believe that Western intervention to impose a government favorable to Italy’s interests is not the solution.
“What was mentioned earlier would have led to a negative response throughout Africa, viewing us as colonizers—like predatory birds aiming to seize uranium, a resource we need,” the Italian diplomat explained,
The annual Rimini Meeting, organized by the Catholic movement “Communion and Liberation,” is in its forty-first edition this year, taking place from August 20 to 25.
