An Israeli soldier was killed and two others sustained serious injuries during clashes near the border with Lebanon, the Israeli military reported.
In a statement issued on Monday morning, the military identified the deceased soldier as Itai Azoulay but did not provide further details about the incident.
In a separate event early today, the Israeli forces intercepted two drones launched from the east, following air raid sirens in the central Israeli regions of Rishon Lezion and Palmachim.
These interceptions occurred on the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks, though the military did not disclose the origin of the drones.
The border between Israel and Lebanon has been a flashpoint for conflict, primarily due to the presence of Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group.
Tensions have frequently escalated into exchanges of fire and other military confrontations.
This area’s strategic significance and historical conflicts contribute to the ongoing volatility, with both sides maintaining a high state of alert.
These recent incidents underscore the fragile security situation along the border, reflecting broader regional tensions that involve various state and non-state actors.
According to a report by The New York Times, citing representatives from UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) and Israel, the Israeli military is endangering UN peacekeepers by positioning its forces adjacent to their sites during ground operations in southern Lebanon.
UNIFIL spokesperson Nick Bernback told the newspaper, “This is a very serious development, and it is unacceptable to compromise the safety of UN peacekeepers while they are carrying out their Security Council-mandated duties.”
