In response to cross-border fire targeting the Golan Heights, Israeli fighter jets conducted airstrikes against “terror infrastructure” sites inside Syria, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday. The IDF stated on Telegram, “A short while ago, in response to the attack toward the Golan Heights yesterday (Saturday), IDF fighter jets struck terror infrastructure sites in Syria.”
The previous day, the IDF reported that two projectiles launched from Syria landed in uninhabited areas of the Golan Heights, triggering rocket alert sirens in the region. This incident prompted the retaliatory airstrikes.
This follows another Israeli strike in Syria on Friday, which was in response to a drone launched from Syria crashing into a school in the southern town of Eilat.
It’s worth noting that Israel occupied a significant portion of the Golan Heights during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it, a move that has not been recognized by the United Nations. Cross-border exchanges of fire have been occurring regularly, not only in the Golan Heights but also along the Lebanon-Israel frontier, as Israel maintains its offensive against Hamas.
