The terrorist group ISIS has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a mosque in Oman that resulted in the deaths of nine people, including a police officer and three attackers, and left over 28 others injured.

The attack occurred on Monday night in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area of the capital, Muscat, targeting a gathering of Shia worshippers during their annual rituals.

ISIS announced in a statement that three of its operatives carried out the attack, causing significant casualties among both civilians and security forces.

According to the Omani news agency, the incident led to the deaths of five civilians and a police officer, along with the three attackers.

Additionally, 28 individuals from various nationalities were injured, including four members of the police and the Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority, who were performing their national duties at the time.

The injured were transported to healthcare facilities for treatment.

Omani authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The Royal Oman Police have emphasized the importance of obtaining information from official sources and cautioned against relying on unverified reports from unofficial channels.

This attack underscores the persistent threat posed by terrorist organizations in the region and highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Oman.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of religious gatherings and the effectiveness of counterterrorism measures in the country.
