The General Directorate for Intelligence and Security of the Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced on Friday the arrest of a female ISIS member in Nineveh Province, northern Iraq.
According to a statement reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the arrest was conducted under the direction and supervision of the Iraqi Defense Minister, Thabit al-Abbasi, as part of ongoing specialized intelligence operations.
The ministry’s statement detailed that the intelligence task force successfully apprehended the ISIS member, who was already wanted under a warrant for terrorism.
She was identified as an operative within the so-called Al-Khansaa Brigade, a unit under what ISIS termed “State of Nineveh.”
She was reportedly responsible for managing women’s prisons and distributing guarantees for the wives of ISIS terrorists.
This operation highlights the continued efforts by Iraqi security forces to dismantle remnants of ISIS networks and secure regions previously under terrorist control.
The Iraqi government has announced a postponement in the scheduled termination of the U.S.-led coalition’s mission in the country. According to a statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the delay is due to recent developments and the need for further logistical arrangements.
The ministry clarified that the recent comments by the U.S. State Department spokesperson were inaccurate, stating that there are no American troops in Iraq apart from military advisors under the umbrella of the international coalition.
These advisors are part of the outcomes of the High Military Committee’s work, and both parties adhere to the established mechanisms and outcomes.
The ministry added that the High Military Committee has spent the past months assessing the threat posed by ISIS in order to set a date for the conclusion of the military mission “Operation Inherent Resolve.”
