Russian strikes have resulted in at least 3 fatalities and 12 injuries in eastern Ukraine, according to a local official, while Ukrainian shelling on a Russian village near the border led to the death of a woman.
As per the Agence France-Presse, Vadim Lyashkin, the governor of the Donetsk region in Ukraine, stated, “Overnight, the Russians attacked Dobropillia (a town about 45 kilometers from the front line) with drones (Shahed); in the morning, rescue workers found the bodies of two people under the rubble of a house.”
He further mentioned that the Russian military also shelled the town of Chasiv Yar, located near the front in the Donetsk region, with artillery in the morning, killing a 66-year-old man.
Vadim Lyashkin continued, stating that three Russian S-300 missiles also struck the town of Mironograd in the Donetsk region, injuring 12 people in an updated toll. He explained that nine residential buildings were damaged due to the shelling.
Meanwhile, the Kyiv air forces announced on Sunday that they shot down 35 out of 39 Shahed drones over 10 regions in central and southern Ukraine.
In Russia, a woman was killed in Ukrainian shelling targeting a village located 10 kilometers from the border, as reported by a local official.
Roman Starovoit, the governor of the Kursk region, said, “Today, the village of Kolbaki in the Glushkovsky district was shelled from Ukraine.”
He added, “As a result of a direct hit by a shell, a residential building caught fire, and a woman from the village died, while her husband sustained severe burns and is now receiving medical care.”
The Russian Defense Ministry also announced that it destroyed two Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod border region.
Moscow had declared on Saturday that it destroyed 47 Ukrainian drones over its southern regions.
Russia’s invasion in 2022 is seen by many analysts as a response to NATO’s expansion into the former Soviet sphere and Ukraine’s deepening ties with the alliance. Despite not being a NATO member, Ukraine had been increasing its cooperation with the alliance, which was viewed by Russia as a direct threat to its security and influence in the region. The conflict also reflects broader issues in European security architecture and Russia’s desire to reassert its influence over its near neighbors.
