Iran’s Minister of Energy, Ali Akbar Mehrabian, announced a plan for electrical interconnection with Russia through two routes, Azerbaijan and Armenia. In a statement to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) on Sunday, the Iranian minister said, “There is a plan to link the Iranian electricity network with the Russian electricity network through two routes, the first through Azerbaijan and the second through Armenia and then Georgia.”
In November of the previous year, the Russian cabinet announced that Russia was discussing with Iran the construction of solar power and wind energy plants on Iranian territory. The cabinet mentioned in a statement that “Russian companies’ participation in projects to build solar power stations in Iran on a turnkey basis with a total installed capacity of no less than 100 megawatts is being discussed.”
In addition to this, it was added that the discussions also include participation in implementing wind power station projects on the border with Afghanistan and on the Iranian coast of the Caspian Sea, based on long-term contracts of up to 20 years.
Russia had hosted the 16th session of the Russian-Iranian Joint Economic Committee in Chechnya from October 29 to November 1, 2022. The committee discussed energy issues, the development of Iranian oil fields, the exchange of oil and gas between the two countries, and the areas of agriculture and mutual exports of agricultural products between the two countries. The committee also discussed current agreements between the two countries in this regard.
Furthermore, the committee also addressed the obstacles that prevent the opening of the “North-South” international transport corridor, which links Russia with the Indian Ocean through Iranian territory.
