Starting from January 1, 2024, mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches will be largely prohibited in Dutch classrooms, according to the Dutch government.
This decision was made to minimize distractions during lessons. These devices will only be allowed if they are required for digital skill lessons, medical reasons, or for students with disabilities.
Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf stated that mobile phones are not suitable for classrooms as they distract students and hinder their concentration, which is supported by scientific research. He emphasized the need to protect students and provide them with a conducive environment to study.
The ban was agreed upon by the ministry, schools, and related organizations. While schools can determine their own approach, Dijkgraaf noted that legal regulations will be enforced if sufficient progress is not made by the summer of 2024.
This measure is expected to create a more focused and productive learning environment for students in the Netherlands.
