Germany witnessed heavy rains, which caused flooding and led to dozens of flight cancelations at Frankfurt Airport, authorities announced on Thursday.
“For more than two hours, ground handling was brought to a standstill,” an airport spokesman said.
He added: “Today, the situation will probably stabilize again … There are still passengers here who need to be booked on to new flights.”
The airport highlighted that large quantities of water accumulated on the tarmac Wednesday evening and ground handling was suspended for more than two hours, according to German news agency dpa.
In this regard, about 70 flights were canceled by 11 p.m., when flying is ordinarily halted for the night, while 23 flights headed for Frankfurt were diverted to other airports.
Downpours in parts of southwestern and central Germany led to flooded basements and streets. The fire service asserted that people were rescued from their cars where several highway underpasses were underwater.
