Hannibal Gaddafi, son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has begun a hunger strike in Lebanon to protest his prolonged detention without trial, according to his lawyer.

Hannibal has been held in Lebanon since 2015 when he was kidnapped from Syria, where he had sought refuge.

Lebanese militants abducted him, seeking information about a missing Shiite cleric who disappeared in Libya 45 years ago.

Hannibal was subsequently taken into custody by Lebanese authorities and has since been held in a Beirut jail without facing trial.

His lawyer stated that Hannibal is committed to the hunger strike until the end but did not provide further details on the case due to media restrictions.
