Germany intends to offer financial support for the reconstruction of Israeli municipalities that were destroyed in a Hamas attack on the 7th of the previous month.

This announcement was made by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during his visit to the Kibbutz Be’eri near the Gaza Strip, which suffered an attack by Hamas. Steinmeier clarified that the German parliament, following his initiative, will provide €7 million in 2024 to Kibbutz Be’eri to fund the rebuilding of a cultural center and a meeting center for the elderly.

President Steinmeier stated, “It is premature to think about reconstruction now,” but added that many people are considering returning to the kibbutz. He emphasized that Be’eri and many other kibbutzim deserve to be not just part of Israel’s history but also a vital part of its future.

Steinmeier further mentioned that Germany is firmly committed to assisting in the reconstruction to ensure a future perspective for the residents of Be’eri. He suggested that young people from Germany, such as apprentices in trades, should participate in this effort.

On his part, Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed his aspiration to rebuild the kibbutz and the entire region, stating, “We will return and rebuild these places, and they will flourish.”

Kibbutz Be’eri, located near the Gaza Strip, has historically been a symbol of Israeli resilience and community living. The recent attacks by Hamas have not only caused physical destruction but also impacted the social and cultural fabric of the area. Germany’s commitment to funding the reconstruction reflects a deeper historical relationship and ongoing partnership between Germany and Israel. This aid is not just about rebuilding infrastructure; it’s about supporting the revival of a community’s spirit and heritage.

The inclusion of young German apprentices in the reconstruction efforts symbolizes a bridge between the past and future, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and international cooperation. This initiative is a testament to the international community’s role in peace-building and the reconstruction of conflict-affected areas.

The reconstruction of Kibbutz Be’eri, supported by Germany, signifies more than just physical rebuilding; it represents a commitment to restoring normalcy, preserving cultural heritage, and nurturing hope for a peaceful and prosperous future. This move is a powerful statement of solidarity and support, reinforcing the bond between Germany and Israel, and showcasing the international community’s role in conflict resolution and rebuilding efforts.
