Germany Calls for Consensus on European Asylum Policy Reform

Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, speaking at her party, the Greens’ federal conference in Karlsruhe, urged readiness for a consensus-based solution regarding the planned reform of European asylum policy.

“Without a system, there can be no humanity,” Baerbock stated on Saturday, highlighting the Green Party’s responsibility within the government to negotiate for a possible agreement in asylum policy. She expressed her conviction that shirking this responsibility is not an option.

Before Baerbock’s speech, a young delegate warned against further “isolation” of Europe.

Baerbock faced significant criticism within her party last summer for agreeing to plans to reform European asylum policy.

These plans include stricter measures to limit the arrival of unwanted individuals in Europe and a notable tightening of procedures for people coming from countries categorized as safe.

Ricarda Lang, re-elected as party leader on Friday, echoed similar sentiments, stating that “the biggest enemy of a consensus solution is the populist.”

She affirmed that standing against right-wing extremists is a democratic duty. Lang emphasized the importance of not only opposing populism but also clarifying support for democratic choices.
