The German Ministry of Defense announced today, Sunday, in the capital Berlin, the cancellation of Defense Minister Boris Pistorius’s short-term visit to Iraq due to security concerns.
The ministry clarified that following the violent riots against the Swedish embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the Federal Criminal Police Office in Germany advised against proceeding with the planned visit.
According to assessments by German authorities, the possibility of further protests and deteriorating conditions cannot be ruled out. The ministry also stated that the decision was made to protect the personnel of the German consulate in Baghdad.
It’s worth noting that burning a copy of the Quran and desecrating the holy book in Sweden has led to renewed protests and rioting in Iraq over the past weeks. Recently, protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad and set it on fire.
Interestingly, the man who set fire to the Quran in Stockholm is a Swedish person of Iraqi origin.
