US Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, announced on Tuesday that delegations participating in the Geneva negotiations to end the civil war in Sudan have met with representatives of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and intend to meet with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) delegation upon their arrival, or through any means they choose, especially after efforts to convince army representatives to attend have so far failed.
In a joint statement from the United States, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, the United Nations, and African Union delegations gathered in Switzerland for Sudan talks, Perriello emphasized the ongoing efforts to enhance civilian protection, secure humanitarian aid access, and halt hostilities in Sudan. The delegations met with RSF representatives as part of these efforts.
Perriello noted that the delegations stressed the urgent humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people, the necessity of respecting international humanitarian law, and the need to implement commitments made under the Jeddah Declaration. This includes the responsibility of both parties to protect civilians, safeguard and respect civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and schools, ensuring they are used for their intended purposes, and allowing the free movement of civilians.
