On Sunday, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) reiterated its steadfast stance on preserving the unity of Syria’s territories and respecting its sovereignty.
The GCC emphasized the rejection of regional interferences in Syria’s internal affairs and expressed support for a political resolution in alignment with relevant United Nations (UN) decisions.
In a statement, the Council also expressed support for the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, to address the Syrian crisis. It acknowledged initiatives aimed at aiding Syrian refugees and internally displaced people, working towards their safe return to their cities and villages, and adhering to international standards.
The GCC also emphasized the importance of continued support for all efforts to assist Syria in overcoming its crisis. It further stressed the necessity of taking effective and practical steps to progressively resolve the Syrian conflict.
The statement welcomed the decision of the Arab League Ministerial Council regarding the resumption of the Syrian government’s participation in the League’s meetings and its affiliated bodies. The Council lauded the Arab efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis step by step, as agreed during the consultative meeting in Amman in May of the Ministerial Contact Group concerned with Syria.
To conclude, the GCC stressed the importance of continued efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people. The Council also welcomed the call from the UN Secretary-General to renew the Security Council’s authorization to extend the mechanism for delivering humanitarian aid across borders for a period of 12 months.
Notably, the Arab League announced, in May, the resumption of Syria’s participation in the League’s meetings and its affiliated organizations. Syria’s participation in the meetings of the Arab League and its affiliated organizations had been suspended since November 2011, due to the Syrian crisis.
