French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, in a recent visit to Rabat, affirmed France’s commitment to strengthening its security cooperation with Morocco, specifically in counter-terrorism efforts and in preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics. This visit marks a significant warming in the diplomatic relations between the two nations.
During a press conference following his meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Abdelouafi Laftit, Darmanin expressed his gratitude towards Morocco, stating, “I want to thank Morocco which will strongly assist us in major sporting events we are organizing, especially the Olympic Games this summer.”
He also highlighted cooperation in securing the African Nations Championship, set to be hosted by Morocco next year.
Darmanin emphasized the crucial role of Moroccan intelligence in safeguarding France, particularly as Paris prepares to host the Olympics.
“Without the Moroccan intelligence services, France would be more exposed to terrorism, especially with the Olympics on the horizon,” he noted.
The Moroccan Ministry of Interior, in a statement, mentioned that the ministers “agreed to strengthen the channels for exchanging expertise and information to better anticipate various risks, especially those linked to the criminal activities of terrorist groups.”
In discussing counter-terrorism, Darmanin pointed to “information from our Moroccan friends about risks that permeate the Sahel and Sahara regions.”
This reinforced partnership comes at a pivotal time as France gears up for the Paris Olympics, ensuring enhanced security measures are in place to handle potential threats and maintain safety during the global event.
