Hamadi Jebali, Tunisia’s former Prime Minister, has been detained, as reported by the Tunisian radio station “Mosaïque FM” today. The arrest followed a raid on his residence in Sousse, according to the “Arab World News Agency.”
Another lawyer, as quoted by “Mosaïque FM”, revealed that Jebali was transported to the Aouina barracks in the capital, Tunis.
The specific reasons for Jebali’s detention or any charges against him have not been communicated to his family, as reported by “Shams” radio.
Jebali served as the Tunisian Prime Minister from late 2011 to early 2013.
Last year, Jebali and his wife were arrested on charges of “possession of dangerous materials.” They were later released after pressure from human rights groups.
In June 2022, Jebali was also arrested on money laundering charges, according to the Interior Ministry at the time.
Tunisia has been in the throes of a deep political crisis since President Kais Saied ousted the government and dissolved parliament in 2021.
While Saied insists that his measures were meant to “save” the country, critics have accused him of orchestrating a coup.
