The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has expressed its gratitude to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for its significant support towards the humanitarian response plan in Sudan.
In a tweet on Tuesday, the FAO highlighted the UAE’s vital role in funding efforts to prevent famine in the region.
The FAO emphasized that the UAE’s financial contributions will bolster the collective efforts of all partners involved in the humanitarian mission in Sudan.
As one of the principal contributors to humanitarian aid in Sudan and across Africa, the UAE has allocated 70% of its $100 million pledge, announced during the International Humanitarian Conference on Sudan in April, to various UN agencies and humanitarian organizations.
The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this support will be directed to key UN partners, including the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), FAO, and the World Health Organization (WHO).
This comprehensive approach aims to address the multifaceted humanitarian crisis in Sudan by providing essential food, healthcare, protection for women and children, and emergency shelter, reaffirming the UAE’s commitment to mitigating the situation.
Beth Bechdol, Deputy Director-General of the FAO, praised the UAE’s financial contributions as part of a broader, multi-agency support effort to combat famine in Sudan.
She noted that the funding comes at a critical time, facilitating the urgent distribution of seeds and supporting the agricultural season.
This partnership and support are crucial for FAO’s seed distribution campaign, which aims to deliver food to 1.2 million households in Sudan and ensure the livelihoods of 6 million people.
Sudan has been grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis exacerbated by ongoing conflict, economic instability, and climate change.
Millions of people face acute food insecurity, with many on the brink of famine. The international community, including the UN and various NGOs, has been working tirelessly to provide aid and support to the affected population.
The UAE has established itself as a key player in global humanitarian efforts, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. Its contributions span various sectors, including food security, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
The UAE’s proactive approach to humanitarian aid is part of its broader foreign policy strategy to promote stability and development in conflict-affected regions.
