The European Union has not yet done enough to enhance its arms production capabilities in response to geopolitical threats, particularly Russia’s war on Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Friday.
Speaking at the GLOBESEC forum in Prague, von der Leyen emphasised that protecting Europe is primarily Europe’s responsibility and called for a much stronger European defense pillar alongside NATO.
She noted that Europe had not done enough for its security at the start of this decade and warned that the second half will be high-risk.
Von der Leyen urged Europeans to refocus on the security dimension of all their actions, stressing that the European Union must be viewed as fundamentally a security project.
