Syria remains a top priority for the European Union despite all challenges and difficulties 13 years after the war,” stated Luis Miguel Bueno, the EU spokesperson. Bueno emphasized that the only way to achieve lasting peace in Syria is through a political solution aligned with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, and the EU is firmly committed to realizing this solution.

On the other hand, Nannar Huash, a Syrian affairs analyst at the International Crisis Group, noted that international reports on the Middle East focusing on the Gaza war and its regional spread have led to further marginalization of the Syrian conflict, according to Arab News.

Huash believes that ongoing stagnation could increase international disengagement, and without significant concessions from Syrian actors and concerned external parties, the Syrian issue risks becoming a forgotten cause.

The recent security situation in Syria is complex and highly volatile, marked by escalating conflicts and a severe humanitarian crisis. Since October, Syria has experienced its largest escalation in fighting in four years, significantly exacerbated by regional tensions and international involvement.

The US has carried out retaliatory strikes against Iranian-affiliated militia groups in response to attacks against US and coalition personnel. At the same time, Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes in Syria, targeting Iranian-linked sites and disrupting vital humanitarian operations.

The political situation in Syria remains highly precarious as the conflict approaches its fourteenth year. The Syrian government, backed by Russia and Iran, has regained control over most of the country, but significant parts remain under the control of various opposition groups and foreign powers. The political landscape is fragmented with ongoing violence and human rights violations reported across the region.

Efforts to reach a political solution have been stagnant. The Syrian Constitutional Committee, aimed at drafting a new constitution, has seen little progress. Discussions have been further complicated by international dynamics and the lack of consensus on a neutral venue for negotiations. The involvement of foreign powers continues to influence the conflict’s dynamics significantly.
