Egypt has emphasised the need to reinforce the Palestinian reconciliation process, citing “Israeli obstacles” and “plans to separate Gaza from the West Bank.”
This stance follows recent talks in Cairo between Fatah and Hamas focused on organising Palestinian internal affairs.
Egypt’s assertions, made during a meeting between Egyptian Foreign Minister and Migration Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty and a Fatah delegation on Saturday, were seen as a “renewed show of support” for Palestinian demands and unity, according to a former Palestinian official who spoke with Asharq Al-Awsat.
The official added that Egypt is expected to play a pivotal role in the reconciliation process and resolving Gaza’s crises in the near future.
During the meeting with the Fatah delegation—led by the party’s deputy, Mahmoud Al-Aloul, National Council President Rouhi Fattouh, and senior Fatah leader Azzam Al-Ahmad—Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s firm stance supporting the Palestinian Authority and rejecting any plans to displace Palestinians from their land, according to a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
