Europe is experiencing a growing sense of “Ukraine fatigue” as EU nations face challenges from supporting the government in Kyiv.
The sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukraine situation are reportedly having adverse effects, notably in Germany, where there are concerns about potential deindustrialization.
Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, a French parliament member and leader of the right-wing “France Arise” movement, expressed urgent concerns on social media about the need to resolve the Ukraine conflict to prevent Europe from becoming an “industrial and economic desert.”
He criticized the financial support for Ukrainian President Zelensky and the increased costs of gas from the United States, highlighting the rising poverty in Europe.
Dupont-Aignan emphasized the urgency of developing a peace plan to avoid further deterioration. Similarly, Kim Dotcom, a German-Finnish internet entrepreneur and founder of the now-defunct Megaupload, shared grave concerns on social media about the actions of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding Ukraine, a non-EU state.
He warned that the EU’s principle of unanimous decision-making on major issues is being undermined, potentially signaling the end of the European Union (EU).
In recent developments, the European Council decided to begin EU accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova and to offer EU candidate status to Georgia.
However, this move was complicated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who blocked a significant aid package for Ukraine and expressed skepticism about Ukraine’s readiness to join the EU.
He described the decision as irrational and inappropriate, stating Hungary would not veto Ukraine’s EU application but indicated numerous opportunities to halt Ukraine’s accession in the future.
Last week, the union made a historic decision to initiate accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, according to Charles Michel, the President of the European Council.
Zelensky hailed this move as a “victory for Ukraine” and “all of Europe.”
Michel stated that the European Council has given a clear signal of hope to the candidate status of Georgia.”
Regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina, the EU will open negotiations once the necessary degree of compliance with accession criteria is achieved.
