The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has called for the inclusion of hardline ministers in Israel’s government on the EU’s blacklist.
His appeal comes amid ongoing tensions and violence in Gaza, which have drawn widespread international concern.
On Monday, Borrell took to social media platform “X” to express his dismay at the actions of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who has called for cutting off fuel and aid to civilians in Gaza.
Borrell condemned these statements, likening them to the incitements made by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, which he described as provocations that could lead to war crimes.
He emphasized that such behavior should prompt serious consideration of sanctions within the European Union.
Borrell urged the Israeli government to distance itself unequivocally from these inflammatory remarks and to engage in negotiations in good faith.
These negotiations, facilitated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, are seen as crucial to achieving an immediate ceasefire in the conflict-ridden region.
Earlier, Borrell had condemned the Israeli airstrike on the “Al-Tabi’in School ” compound in Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of over 120 people.
He stated that there is no justification for such atrocities and reiterated that a ceasefire is the only viable solution to end the devastation in Gaza.
Borrell also criticized Israeli Finance Minister Smotrich for his opposition to a ceasefire, reaffirming the European Union’s support for international efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
