Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has issued a statement regarding the situation unfolding in Iraq’s Kirkuk governorate, emphasizing Turkey’s commitment to preserving the security and unity of this region. Erdoğan acknowledged Kirkuk’s unique cultural diversity, where various communities have coexisted harmoniously, and underscored Turkey’s determination to safeguard its security and territorial integrity.
Erdoğan further stressed the importance of avoiding any activities that could potentially alter Kirkuk’s demographic makeup, emphasizing the need for maintaining peace in the region.
Meanwhile, Nasser Kanaani, the spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed Iran’s stance on the matter, emphasizing respect for Iraq’s sovereignty and refraining from involvement in its internal affairs. Kanaani highlighted Iran’s support for Iraq’s internal stability and its central government’s efforts to address the situation. He also reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to provide assistance if requested, aiming to contribute to stability and dispute resolution in neighboring countries.
Recent developments in Kirkuk have seen protests led by demonstrators representing various political factions aligned with Arab and Turkmen interests. These protests resulted in the blockage of the main road connecting Kirkuk to Erbil. The demonstrations were prompted by the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) plan to reopen its offices in Kirkuk, following a political agreement with the Coalition of State Administration, which comprises political forces in Iraq’s federal government led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani.
Kirkuk also witnessed a separate demonstration led by Kurdish protesters residing in Kurdish-majority areas. Their demands included the reopening of the road and an end to sit-ins at the KDP’s headquarters. Tragically, this peaceful protest turned violent, resulting in casualties and injuries.
In response to these developments, Iraqi security authorities imposed a curfew in Kirkuk to restore order and stability in the region.
