Greenpeace protesters took direct action against British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s home in Yorkshire, England, on Thursday, draping the property with black fabric as part of their campaign against the government’s oil drilling policies.
Four protesters used ladders to access the roof of Sunak’s private residence, where they hung large sheets of black fabric.
The demonstration lasted for five hours, and a former senior police officer described it as a “major breach of security.”
The Prime Minister was not present at the time, as he had left for a holiday in California the previous day.
In total, five protesters were arrested during the demonstration.
Sunak’s approach to environmental issues has been a point of contention, particularly his statement about taking a “proportionate approach” to climate change, which aims to balance net-zero ambitions with the concern of keeping consumers’ bills down.
Climate activists have expressed outrage at this stance and have been disrupting various high-profile events, including sporting events, music concerts, and political speeches.
