On Monday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi hosted his Palestinian counterpart, Mahmoud Abbas, in a high-profile meeting that underscored Egypt’s historical and steadfast support for the Palestinian cause.
According to the official spokesperson of the Egyptian Presidency, Counselor Ahmed Fahmi, El-Sisi extended a warm welcome to President Abbas, affirming Egypt’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people. He expressed Egypt’s satisfaction in hosting the meeting of Palestinian factions, which convened the previous day in the New Alamein City and was attended by President Abbas. The summit focused on ongoing dialogue around various issues, with the goal of ending the state of division and restoring Palestinian national unity.
President Abbas expressed sincere gratitude to President El-Sisi for Egypt’s hospitality during the crucial meeting and its historical embrace of the Palestinian cause and concerns. Abbas noted that the faction meeting is held amidst significant international, regional, and field developments and provides an excellent opportunity to discuss and exchange views on the best path to achieve national reconciliation.
The spokesperson added that the leaders discussed ways to coordinate positions and perspectives on a number of topics related to the Palestinian cause, particularly the revival of the peace process. There was a strong emphasis on the need to preserve Palestinian rights and continue efforts towards achieving comprehensive, fair, and permanent peace based on the two-state solution. This includes establishing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law, relevant international legality resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative. These efforts aim to secure stability, security, and prosperity for all peoples in the region.
