Egypt has welcomed the outcome of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
In a statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt praised the UAE’s success in organizing the conference, which resulted in a number of historic agreements.
Egypt also commended the UAE’s leadership of the negotiations that led to the “UAE Consensus,” a set of principles that will guide the international effort to address climate change. These principles include the need for climate action to be fair and equitable, and the need to ensure that climate finance flows to developing countries.
Egypt also highlighted the historic achievement of the first global assessment of climate action since the Paris Agreement, as well as the framework for the global goal on adaptation.
“The UAE’s success in hosting COP28 is a new achievement for the Arab world, following the success of COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh last year,” the statement said.
In a separate statement, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry congratulated Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the president of COP28, on the outcome of the conference and his leadership of the negotiations.
The UAE’s success in hosting COP28 was seen as a major victory for the country, which has made climate change a top priority of its foreign policy. The UAE has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
