The Brazilian government has invited Egypt to participate as a guest in all G20 meetings during Brazil’s presidency of the group, which began this December and will last for a year.
This invitation reflects the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and underscores Egypt’s regional and international stature and its influential role in major international economic issues, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Egypt was represented by Ambassador Ragy El-Attar, the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for International and Regional Economic Affairs, in the meeting of the Personal Representatives of the leaders of the G20, which took place in the capital, Brasília, last week.
During the meeting, an action plan for the group in the coming period was discussed.
This plan is centered around finding collective and innovative solutions to the structural challenges facing the global economy, especially in terms of poverty alleviation, inequality reduction, sustainable development efforts, the development of international economic institutions, and the optimal transition to clean energy use to address climate change.
Egypt’s participation in the G20 meetings is the fourth of its kind since the group’s establishment and the second in a row, following Egypt’s participation in the previous G20 meetings during India’s presidency.
Egypt was also represented by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in the G20 Summit held in Delhi in September.
Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs El-Attar pointed out that Egypt’s current participation comes during a phase where the G20 is facing increasing challenges due to the successive crises that have afflicted the world, starting with the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by the repercussions of the Russia-Ukraine war, and the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza due to Israel’s continuous aggression.
He emphasized that the G20 member states collectively represent 80% of the world’s GDP, 75% of global trade volume, and 60% of the world’s population, making them a crucial decision-making framework on the international economic level.
El-Attar further explained that Egypt’s contributions during the discussions in Brasília reflect its commitment to continuing active and influential participation in G20 meetings to enhance international joint efforts on various issues on the G20 agenda.
This includes priority issues for Egypt, Africa, and developing countries such as food security, energy, debt, development financing, and reforming the global economic system.
