At least 10 civilians were killed in an attack by the “Allied Democratic Forces” militia, claimed by the terrorist organization ISIS as its branch in Central Africa, on two towns in North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Local media reported on Sunday that the first attack occurred at 7 PM last Friday when elements of the Allied Democratic Forces militia attacked the town of “Mapu,” located 30 km northeast of the city of “Beni.”
Government sources reported that the attack on the town of “Mapu” resulted in the death of 7 farmers returning from their fields, while two men and a woman are considered missing.
The second attack occurred when elements of the “Allied Democratic Forces” militia subsequently attacked the town of “Kampo” in the “May-Moya” area, located on the eastern side of the “Leva” river, resulting in the death of 3 civilians.
Sangoiya Kakuli, the governor of the “May-Moya” region, indicated that in addition to the previous victims, the militia also killed farmers from the nearby town of “Oisha.”
The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s army announced this morning that it had reinforced its forces in the towns of “Mapu” and “Kampo” and the “May-Moya” area to protect civilians.
The announcement of the attacks by the “Allied Democratic Forces” militia comes days before the presidential, legislative, and municipal elections scheduled in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on December 20th.
The United States of America renewed its readiness to use all available tools, including imposing visa restrictions, against anyone obstructing the elections or undermining the ongoing democratic process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to a statement by the U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa yesterday.
