Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has reiterated his country’s rejection of any unilateral actions taken by Ethiopia concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), including its ongoing filling operations.
He emphasized that Egypt is grappling with severe water scarcity, with an annual deficit exceeding 50%.
During a meeting with Annete Faiher, the European Union’s envoy to the African Union, Shoukry issued a warning that failing to reach an agreement that incorporates essential measures to protect the water rights of both Egypt and Sudan could escalate tensions in the region.
Such escalation could potentially lead to crises and conflicts that threaten the region’s stability. He reaffirmed Cairo’s determination to assert its water rights.
On the other hand, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, clarified that the meeting addressed recent rounds of negotiations regarding the GERD.
Egypt firmly stands by the necessity of reaching a legally binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam.
He expressed Egypt’s rejection of Ethiopia’s obstinate positions, driven by unilateral actions, and underscored the importance of reaching a consensus that serves the interests of all parties involved.
The meeting also addressed the Sudanese crisis, with both sides discussing the efforts of neighboring countries since Egypt hosted the summit of regional nations.
Shoukry stressed the utmost importance of fully respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, while preserving the Sudanese state, its capacities, and institutions.
He emphasized the need to seriously and comprehensively address the humanitarian consequences of the current crisis.
Egyptian foreign minister Shoukry attentively listened to the comprehensive assessment provided by the European envoy on her contacts with all parties involved in an attempt to contain the situation in Sudan, including her communication with various political forces.
Moreover, the discussion encompassed the situation in Somalia, where Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast support for Somalia’s efforts in combating the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, restoring stability, and advancing the political process.
