On Saturday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Musa Al-Koni, the Deputy Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, on the sidelines of the ongoing Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit in Gambia.
Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, clarified that Minister Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting the Libyan Presidential Council and maintaining its unity and cohesion, in light of the longstanding historical relations between the two brotherly nations.
Minister Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s unwavering support for the Libyan-led resolution process, emphasizing Cairo’s continued efforts to bridge differences among Libyan factions. He highlighted Egypt’s support for the role of institutions and the dialogue hosted by the Arab League involving key Libyan leaders — Aguila Saleh, head of the State Council Mohamed Takala, and Presidential Council head Mohamed Al-Menfi — aiming to reach an agreement on conducting presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently at the earliest opportunity, under the supervision of a unified government.
The meeting also addressed the necessity of persistently working towards disbanding militias and ensuring the withdrawal of all foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters from Libya within a specified timeframe, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the outcomes of the Paris and Berlin processes.
