On Tuesday, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Badr Abdel Aty, emphasized the urgent need to “preserve the Sudanese state, its resources, and institutions, and to address the humanitarian consequences of the current crisis seriously and urgently.”
This statement was made during a meeting between Minister Abdel Aty and the European Union Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid.
In a press release, Abu Zeid stated that the meeting involved an exchange of views on various security and political challenges facing the Horn of Africa region.
Minister Abdel Aty listened to a comprehensive assessment from the EU envoy regarding the escalating crises and the rise of terrorism and extremism in the region.
Minister Abdel Aty highlighted Egypt’s commitment to strengthening its relations with Horn of Africa countries, noting his recent visits to Somalia and Djibouti to inaugurate the first direct flight route between the three nations.
This initiative underscores the deep and significant ties between Egypt and these countries and Egypt’s dedication to enhancing connectivity with the Horn of Africa, a region of strategic importance to Egypt’s national security.
In this context, Minister Abdel Aty stressed the importance of supporting Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government in achieving stability, development, and combating terrorism.
The spokesperson added that Minister Abdel Aty also discussed the issue of Red Sea security, ensuring the freedom of international navigation, and the impact of escalating security threats on the global economy, particularly the losses Egypt has incurred from the reduced revenues of the Suez Canal.
Minister Abdel Aty reviewed the outcomes of the Sudanese political and civil forces conference and Egypt’s efforts to create common ground among Sudanese factions to explore ways to resolve the crisis and initiate a comprehensive political process.
Both sides agreed on the necessity of concerted efforts to defuse the conflict, the importance of coordination among all effective mediation channels, and the need to employ all necessary diplomatic and political means to resolve the crisis as soon as possible.
