A van crashed into barriers at Lafayette Square, located just across the road from the White House, on Monday night, as confirmed by the US Secret Service. Following the incident, the driver was promptly detained, and pedestrian walkways as well as several roads were temporarily closed for security purposes.

Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the US Secret Service, took to Twitter to assure the public that there were no injuries sustained by Secret Service or White House personnel. The cause and circumstances surrounding the crash are currently under investigation.

The nearby Hay Adams hotel was reportedly evacuated in response to the incident, according to Fox 5 television news. Footage broadcast by WUSA television station showed a U-Haul removal company truck stationed alongside a line of steel bollards, with uniformed law enforcement officers approaching the vehicle.

Following the crash, the authorities employed a remote-controlled robot to partially open the vehicle’s door, revealing a removal dolly but no other apparent cargo, as reported by Shomari Stone of Fox 5. Witness accounts cited by WUSA indicated that the driver struck the barriers a second time after the initial collision.

The Washington Fire Department received a call at approximately 9:40 PM local time, and a suspicious package was subsequently investigated. Public Information Officer Vito Maggiolo assured that all units were ready to assist law enforcement with their ongoing investigation.
