In a surprising move, Martin Braithwaite, the Danish footballer, is reportedly attempting to buy his former club Espanyol, according to the Spanish newspaper Marca.

Braithwaite, who recently transferred to Brazilian club Gremio from Espanyol during the current transfer window, is making headlines with his unexpected decision.

The player, recognized as one of the wealthiest footballers globally, has been featured on Forbes’ list. He recently signed with Gremio to compete in the Copa Libertadores.

Marca reported that Braithwaite’s departure from Espanyol stemmed from conflicts with the club’s management, and he plans to overhaul the current administration if his acquisition succeeds.

Previously linked with Lionel Messi at Barcelona, Braithwaite owns several businesses, including a real estate company in the United States worth $250 million.

He currently possesses over 1500 apartments, with an additional 500 residential units under construction.

The 33-year-old footballer has amassed his fortune over the past five years, which includes a successful clothing brand named “Trente” in Europe and the popular Gava restaurants in Barcelona and France.

According to Marca, Braithwaite earns more as a businessman than as a professional football player, despite his substantial earnings on the field.

It is worth highlighting that Espanyol is currently owned by Chinese toy car maker Rastar Group and its billionaire chairman Chen Yansheng.
