Toronto, Canada saw thousands of climate activists take to the streets, united in their urgent call to put an end to the use of fossil fuels. Their collective action comes amid rising concerns about the Earth’s increasing temperature and a recent report warning of a substantial uptick in extreme weather events across Ontario in the coming decades.
The demonstrators, predominantly led by young activists, marched through downtown Toronto, holding aloft signs and banners bearing powerful messages such as “The Fight to End Fossil Fuels is Here” and “Canada is burning. Stop fossil fuel and save our Greenbelt.” Their demands were clear: they called for immediate and decisive action from both governments and corporations to combat the pressing issue of climate change.
This protest was a part of the global climate action strike, with individuals of all age groups converging on Queen’s Park to amplify their voices.
“Fossil fuels are literally killing us,” asserted Dr. Mili Roy, MD, Ontario regional co-chair of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE). She emphasized that fossil fuels not only exacerbate the climate crisis, now recognized as the single most significant human health crisis of our era but also contribute to lethal air pollution, prematurely claiming the lives of over 15,000 Canadians each year.
According to Dr. Roy, the only sustainable and thriving path forward for the future necessitates a complete transition away from fossil fuels.
