Chile has urged the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate crimes committed in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Chilean representative to the United Nations announced her intention to promptly refer the situation in Palestine to the ICC’s Prosecutor’s Office to probe the crimes occurring in the occupied Palestinian territories. Chile also expressed the hope for support from other nations in this endeavor.

This move follows the ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza that has been ongoing since October 7th of the previous year. In response to these events, Chile withdrew its ambassador from Tel Aviv.

Additionally, a group of 100 Chilean lawyers, many of Palestinian origin, filed a complaint with the ICC concerning the crimes committed by the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip.

These crimes include allegations of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, which violate the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949.

Among the lawyers involved in this action are members of the Chilean Senate: Francisco Chahuán, Ximena Rincón, Paulina Vodanovic, Iván Moreira, Sergio Gahona, and Alfonso de Urresti.

Their complaint details Israel’s disproportionate retaliation against elderly individuals, women, children, and the sick, as well as accusations of genocide, as reported by the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

The ongoing Israeli aggression, which has persisted for 96 days, has resulted in the deaths of 23,210 people and the injuries of 59,167 others.

It has also caused extensive destruction in the Gaza Strip and the displacement of approximately 85% of its 2.3 million inhabitants, leaving a quarter of the population facing famine, according to the latest statistics from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
