The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced the targeting of three Houthi drones in Yemen’s Red Sea region.
In a statement posted on its official X platform account, CENTCOM detailed the successful destruction of two Houthi drones over the Red Sea within the past 24 hours.
Additionally, a surface drone operating in the Red Sea was also destroyed.
CENTCOM reported the successful destruction of another Houthi drone in a region controlled by the Houthis in Yemen.
CENTCOM emphasized that the Houthi attacks pose an imminent threat to the United States, coalition forces, and commercial shipping vessels in the region.
The statement underscored the necessity of these countermeasures to protect the freedom of navigation and to ensure the safety and security of international waters.
“The actions taken against these drones and the surface vessel were essential to protect the freedom of navigation and to make international waters safer and more secure,” the statement concluded.
This recent engagement highlights the ongoing tensions and security challenges in the Red Sea region, emphasizing the critical role of international military efforts in maintaining maritime safety.
Iran-backed Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have revitalized Somali piracy networks, significantly bolstering their numbers and strength, according to a European naval force official.
The Houthis, based in Yemen, began targeting ships in the Red Sea last year, aiming to pressure Israel and its allies concerning the Gaza conflict.
Their campaign has disrupted global shipping operations, forcing many vessels to reroute thousands of miles around South Africa instead of the traditional path.
This diversion has led to a surge in carbon emissions and shipping costs, as ships endure much longer journeys to deliver the same cargo.
