During an unexpected visit to Kyiv on Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced additional military assistance for Ukraine as the country prepares for a counteroffensive against Russian forces and grapples with ongoing air strikes.
Trudeau began his visit by paying tribute at a memorial site in central Kyiv dedicated to Ukrainian soldiers who have lost their lives in the conflict with pro-Russian forces since 2014.
He then held talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, where he expressed Canada’s unwavering support, stating, “We will be there with you as much as it takes, for as long as it takes.” Video footage of the discussions was released by the Kyiv authorities.
The specifics of the military aid package announced by Trudeau were not immediately disclosed.
However, the move demonstrates Canada’s commitment to assisting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
