Josep Borrell, the European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief, warned on Sunday that the signs of a global war are reemerging. Borrell highlighted that a nuclear confrontation has become a realistic possibility due to escalating tensions between the East and the West, emphasizing the critical need to avoid reopening the “war box”.

The EU’s top diplomat noted, “Trade competitions between the East and the West are turning into conflicts due to a lack of trust.” He added that Europe has weakened itself by not diversifying its energy sources and relying heavily on Russia.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell recently made significant remarks concerning global tensions and nuclear threats. He emphasized the real possibility of nuclear confrontation due to increasing tensions between the East and the West, particularly pointing to the serious implications if the nuclear threat were actualized. Borrell’s statement was in direct response to comments from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has warned NATO about Russia’s capacity to defend its territorial integrity using various means, including nuclear. Borrell sternly warned that any nuclear attack by Russia could lead to severe non-nuclear military retaliation from the EU and its allies, which could annihilate the Russian army.

Additionally, Borrell’s recent speeches have been quite forthright, reflecting a broader and deeply concerned view about the current global political climate. He mentioned the challenges to the rules-based international order and discussed the profound shifts in global politics triggered by Russia’s actions in Ukraine, which he believes will lead to significant changes in the European Union. He metaphorically described Europe as a ‘garden’ of political freedom and economic prosperity, surrounded by a ‘jungle’ of global instability, urging that building walls is not the solution. Instead, he advocated for engaging proactively with the world to safeguard European values and interests.
