The President of the Arab Parliamentary Union and President of the Algerian People’s National Assembly (the first chamber of parliament), Ibrahim Boughali, has emphasized the need to propose constructive and tangible initiatives to enhance joint Arab parliamentary work, especially at the level of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, and to study all mechanisms and methods that enable the union to monitor Israeli occupation crimes.
This statement was made during Boughali’s speech at the opening session of the 34th Executive Committee meeting of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union in Algiers.
Boughali highlighted the grave developments on both regional and international levels, which cast deep shadows and effects on the Arab region, particularly “the situation in Palestine and the severe racial cleansing and heinous crimes committed against the Palestinian people by the Zionist occupation.
This is a continuation of the colonial project aimed at eliminating the Palestinian cause and dragging the region into violence and chaos.”
He affirmed that the responsibility of Arab parliaments, as representatives of Arab peoples in this common parliamentary space, is significant and demanding.
Their duty is to work diligently to strengthen the union’s position and role to meet the requirements of the current phase and fulfill the aspirations and hopes of Arab peoples.
Boughali noted that the situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories will be at the core of the agenda for the 36th Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union conference.
He urged participants to propose constructive and tangible initiatives to enhance joint Arab parliamentary work, especially at the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union level, and to explore all mechanisms and methods that enable the monitoring of Zionist occupation crimes.
He concluded by stating, “It is time to restore our strong and effective presence on the international stage. We have seen what has been achieved at the United Nations General Assembly level through its historic decision regarding full membership for the State of Palestine, as a result of unified efforts.”
