Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, strongly condemned the Israeli airstrike on the town of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, which resulted in dozens of casualties, including the death of the mayor and several aid workers.
According to the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Jamal Rushdi, Aboul Gheit emphasized that Israeli airstrikes are indiscriminate, targeting civilians and infrastructure, attempting to replicate the brutal scenario from Gaza in Lebanon. He also criticized Israel’s disregard for European voices calling for restraint, mentioning French President Emmanuel Macron’s condemnation of Israeli strikes as indiscriminate.
Aboul Gheit noted that Israel is actively depopulating northern Gaza and committing increasingly brutal massacres against civilians, continuing a pattern of forced displacement. He stressed that the situation in Gaza has reached unimaginable levels of criminality and warned that allowing the same scenario to unfold in Lebanon would make the international community complicit through inaction.
The humanitarian situation in both Gaza and Lebanon has worsened significantly due to the ongoing conflict with Israel. In Gaza, Israeli military operations have led to widespread civilian casualties and displacement, while essential services like healthcare and water access are collapsing. In Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes have targeted Hezbollah positions, displacing thousands and intensifying fears of a broader regional conflict. Diplomatic efforts for ceasefire have stalled, and the situation remains volatile, with both Gaza and Lebanon facing severe humanitarian crises.
