Algerian Energy Minister, Mohamed Arkab, discussed with Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, Fatma Zohra Chebbi, ways to enhance and develop bilateral relations, especially in the fields of fuel production and marketing, electricity production and transmission, as well as in new and renewable energies and the transition towards clean energy.

This took place on the sidelines of the third edition of the international forum “Towards the South: The European Strategy for a New Geopolitical and Economic Era in the Mediterranean Region” on Friday in Sorrento, Italy.

According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Energy, the two sides discussed the progress and development of current projects and contracts in the fields of gas and electricity and explored future cooperation opportunities by studying possibilities in the mining sector, especially the exploitation and processing of phosphate products, and the exchange of expertise and training.

The ministers also touched on the ongoing preparations for the Algerian-Tunisian bilateral energy and mining committee, which is set to be held in the Tunisian capital later this year.

Algeria and Tunisia have been working on enhancing their electricity interconnection. The goal is to create a more resilient and integrated power grid that can support the energy needs of both nations. This project is expected to improve energy security and provide a reliable electricity supply, particularly during peak demand periods

In March 2024, Algeria and Tunisia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation in the renewable energy sector. The MoU outlines joint ventures in solar and wind energy projects, aiming to harness the vast renewable energy potential of both countries. This agreement is part of a broader strategy to diversify energy sources and transition towards cleaner energy .

In late 2023, Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab visited Tunisia to discuss expanding bilateral energy cooperation. The discussions focused on increasing the export of Algerian natural gas to Tunisia and enhancing electricity connectivity between the two countries. This visit marked a significant step in solidifying the energy partnership between Algeria and Tunisia.
