Algeria has called on the Non-Aligned Movement to adopt a strong and firm stance on the Palestinian issue during the movement’s 19th summit.
This call was made during a speech by Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, at the Ministerial Meeting held on Wednesday in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, in preparation for the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Attaf explained that Algeria looks forward to this summit as another valuable opportunity to initiate a new and renewed active, effective, and influential role for this bloc in the current international context, burdened with challenges and threats on various levels and in all fields.
He expressed hope that the summit would serve the global public good, contribute to reducing escalating tensions and increasing polarizations on the global stage, and push for the establishment of a balanced and just international system; ensuring security, stability, and prosperity for all, ending the prolonged marginalization of developing countries, and responding to their needs and aspirations.
Attaf also affirmed Algeria’s commitment to contribute seriously and responsibly in achieving this new and renewed start, and to work from its position in the Security Council to preserve the interests of the Non-Aligned Movement and enhance its goals and initiatives.
The Algerian Foreign Minister pointed out that the Palestinian issue needs more support from the Non-Aligned Movement, which, by virtue of its moral and ethical weight and political influence, based on its firm and honorable positions on this matter, can contribute to enhancing diplomatic pressure to put an end to the Israeli killing and destruction machine in the Gaza Strip, hold those responsible accountable, and expedite the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state as a radical and final solution to the entire conflict.
He added that the initiative of the Republic of South Africa to file a lawsuit against the Israeli settlement occupation before the International Court of Justice, accusing it of waging a war of extermination in Gaza, deserves all appreciation, support, and praise; describing it as “the right step in the right direction.”
Attaf also called for the activation of the advanced positions of the Non-Aligned Movement regarding the reform process of the United Nations, the restoration of multilateral international action, and the strengthening of its contribution to protecting existing international relations from the repercussions of harmful unipolarity and power policies that disrupt the pillars of international peace and security.
The recent situation in Gaza is dire, with significant impacts on the population due to the ongoing conflict. The death toll in Gaza since October 7 has reached 23,843, with more than 60,317 wounded. This includes an incident where an overnight Israeli army attack on a house in Rafah resulted in the death of 14 Palestinians, including a two-year-old girl, and 135 Palestinians were killed and 312 wounded in just 24 hours.
