In response to the anticipated climate changes, civil society organizations in Algeria have launched a series of proactive campaigns aimed at mitigating the risk of floods as heavy rains are expected in many regions with the onset of September.
These organizations have taken to social media to issue urgent calls, urging the public to avoid disposing of waste in drains and to actively participate in cleaning efforts in coordination with various municipal services and charitable associations.
The initiative seeks to prevent the recurrent issue of blocked drains, which has become a yearly problem leading to severe flooding.
In preparation for the expected autumn weather changes and heavy rains, several regional associations and municipal departments have begun cleaning drains, water channels, and rainwater drainage systems.
These preventive actions are focused on ensuring that flood-prone areas, especially those with high population densities and crowded residential neighborhoods, are safeguarded.
The campaign, which started in early August, will continue until the end of September.
The National Office of Sanitation (ONA) in the M’sila and Sétif regions has also announced a major initiative to clean rivers, clear drains, and purify rainwater channels.
They have already commenced the cleaning of sewage systems and watercourses in these areas.
Additionally, the ONA has called on residents to clean the areas in front of their homes, removing garbage, tree branches, and other debris that could cause blockages in the drainage systems.
The campaign is further supported by local associations and owners of public works machinery and trucks, who are actively participating in the large-scale cleaning efforts.
