In a move signaling a paradigm shift towards strengthening Eastern alliances, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, presided over the signing of 19 agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on Tuesday. The event took place during President Tebboune’s visit to Beijing.
The signed agreements encompass cooperation in numerous domains such as railway transport, the establishment of a technology transfer center, collaboration in agriculture, and the definition of new cooperation frameworks in the communication sector.
Notably, the meeting also yielded a MoU between the Chinese Academy of Governance and the Algerian Ministry of Interior, Local Assemblies and Urban Planning. Additionally, MoUs were inked in the area of sports, bolstering trade cooperation, creating a team of specialists to foster economic and investment cooperation between the countries, and technical cooperation in the field of animal and plant quarantine.
Further agreements were signed concerning the executive program for cooperation and exchange in scientific research, an MoU for collaboration in the judiciary sector, and another MoU for cooperation in social development and renewable and hydrogen energy sectors.
On Monday, the Algerian President commenced his two-day visit to the Chinese capital, Beijing, at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. The visit marks a new step towards reinforcing Eastward alliances.
Two Algerian parliamentarians emphasized that President Tebboune’s visit aims to bolster partnerships with Eastern countries and distance itself from the European bloc, whose economic reliability they deemed questionable.
China has been Algeria’s primary commercial financier since 2019, accounting for 17% (equivalent to 9 billion dollars) according to official statistics. This current series of agreements further cements the ties between these two nations, making the outlook of their cooperation promising.
