Algeria has demanded an emergency session of the UN Security Council, scheduled for next Tuesday, in response to a recent Israeli military strike.
The attack targeted a school in the Al-Daraj district of eastern Gaza City, which was sheltering displaced Palestinians, resulting in at least 100 fatalities.
According to a diplomatic source in New York, Algeria’s request for the meeting was made “in light of the grave recent developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly following the aerial attack carried out by the Israeli military on a school in Gaza,” as reported by Algeria’s News Agency.
The source added that the request was made in consultation with the State of Palestine and has received support from other member states of the Security Council.
The Israeli airstrike occurred early Saturday morning, during which over 100 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured.
The Civil Defense reported that the Israeli warplanes bombed the school while residents were performing the Fajr (dawn) prayers. The incident has escalated international concern and prompted calls for immediate action to address the ongoing conflict.
Riyad Mansour, the Permanent Palestinian Delegate to the United Nations (UN), has called on the International Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities in halting the brutal Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip.
In a statement to Al Arabiya Al Hadath news channel on Sunday, Mansour announced that “the Security Council will hold an open emergency session next Tuesday to discuss the Israeli attack on the Tabi’een School in Gaza,” emphasizing the need for the council to condemn this savage attack and to hold the responsible Israeli officials accountable. The attack resulted in the deaths of nearly one hundred Palestinians.
Mansour also highlighted the necessity to address the Israeli crimes committed against Palestinian prisoners and their mistreatment, according to reports from Israeli civil society organizations.
